In the course of doing a daily radio show, a lot of information comes across my desk, much of it having to do with diet, health and exercise.  Here’s just a sampling of some recent reports.

GET HEALTHY BY SIMPLY TAKING THE STAIRS

Using the stairs at work instead of taking elevators could be a life saver. A small Swiss study found that walking up and down stairs for three months increased levels of fitness dramatically. Subjects also saw marked reduction in waist size, body fat, blood pressure and cholesterol — all of which are known risk factors for heart disease.

HOW MUCH WEIGHT LOSS?

There are all sorts of extreme diets around that result in people losing 10 or more pounds in a week. That’s not good for your body, say doctors in an article in Men’s Health. The general rule of thumb to lose weight and stay healthy is just about 1 to 2 pounds per week.

DRAW A FOOD PICTURE FOR AN INSTANT MOOD BOOST 

Want an instant mood boost? Just draw a picture of your favorite fatty snack food. Researchers discovered that people who sketched pictures of pizza, cupcakes, and strawberries saw their mood boost by 28 percent. Veggies, as you would suspect, had no effect.

AC DIET TRICK

Here’s a way to save money, help the planet, and lose weight: Just turn off your air conditioning. When your body temperature is comfortable, you eat more, but when you’re hot, hunger levels go down. So warm up and reap the benefits according to the book Toxic Fat, by Barry Sears, Ph.D.
