Ask the Expert - Early Financial Planning for a Disabled Child | Nashville Christian Family Magazine July 2023 issue - free Christian magazine

Question:  I recently had a baby boy.  He has Down’s Syndrome.  I want to plan for his future, right now.  What can I do to help him have a bright future, even after my husband and I are gone?

Answer: Planning for your son’s future is admirable.  There are a couple things you can do right now so your son has financial resources available. The first is to set up an ABLE Account (Achieving a Better Life Experience) through the state of Tennessee.  https://able.treasury.tn.gov/. The second thing is to establish a third-party supplemental needs trust with an established trust company. https://vistapoints.org/third-party/  Both of these types of financial instruments will provide for items or services your son needs either now or in the future.
