A monthly column on diet, exercise and my weight loss journey.

In the course of doing a daily radio show, a lot of information comes across my desk, much of it having to do with diet, health and exercise.  Here’s just a sampling of some recent reports.

BIG BREAKFASTS ARE GOOD

Trying to lose weight? Eat a big breakfast. Consuming more calories at breakfast is linked to a greater chance of losing weight and reducing the waistline. In general, people who consume their daily calories earlier in the day can double weight loss, according to a report in the International Journal of Obesity

DIETING MAKES YOU GAIN WEIGHT

Here’s a cruel reality: Research suggests that dieting can lead to increase in weight. Dieting can alter hormones, metabolism and your brain, turning food craving into an obsession. So, the more you diet the more you want to eat, according to a report in the International Journal of Obesity

FOOD BLISS

Here’s why you just can’t eat one nacho: Nachos, and dozens of other unhealthy dishes, have been scientifically engineered to make you want to eat more…and more. Human beings have what food-industry insiders call a “bliss point,” a nirvana of the taste buds triggered by amounts of salt, sugar, and fat. Menu scientists at popular restaurant chains and packaged-food corporations use their knowledge of the bliss point to manipulate your appetite, adding salt, sugar, and fat to their products in combinations designed to create a taste experience so intense that it kicks the brain’s pleasure system into overdrive. It’s like a drug. And like any drug, it leads you to obsess about that moment of pleasure so much that you’ll do almost anything to prolong or relive it. The result: a bigger bottom line for the restaurants and a bigger waistline for you.
