Lies are everywhere. We are them from the world, our culture, and people. The only place you’ll find the absolute truth is the Bible. While the authority of the Bible is questioned at every turn – God’s Word is still the gold standard. His Word gives us everything we need to live with true joy and contentment.
Back to those lies – my Bridges guest Cyndi Galley shared how as a young woman in full time ministry allowed the wrong but all too handsome guy into her life. When it didn’t work out Cyndi was disappointed and felt that God didn’t have her best interests at heart. Of course that wasn’t true, but that is how she felt. As we talked on the Bridges set Cyndi shared how important it is that we know the truth.
Know the Truth
Knowing the truth sounds easy but it requires some work. Reading God’s Word. Declaring His promises. Gathering with likeminded people of faith on a regular basis. All those things require our intentionality. Those things don’t “just happen”. We make them happen by deciding to live as a follower of Christ and obeying His Word.
Never Settle
As we know the truth that sets us apart from the world, we also decide that we won’t settle. That means we don’t buy the lies that say – “it’s okay just this once” or “this isn’t that bad” or whatever other lie that comes our way. Being a Christ follower means we’ve decided we will never settle. When we find that are settling or have settled – we quickly repent and ask for God’s forgiveness, mercy and grace. His forgiveness and grace give us the courage to walk away from lies that hurt us and take us out of His will. When we settle and repent, we stand on this scripture:
My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.
Be Content
Lies like you aren’t enough or that you need more to be happy steal our contentment and joy. We are all enough in Christ. His unconditional love gives us the value and contentment we all need to have true joy. Steeping ourselves in the truth gives us wisdom and the light we need for the next step. God’s plan is always better than what the world offers. Regardless of how pretty the lie is wrapped it always results in pain and disappointment. The lies that keep us looking for more prohibit us from seeing that in Christ we already have all we need.
