A monthly column on diet, exercise and my weight loss journey.

Over the last month, there has been no shortage of news crossing my desk having to do with weight loss. Here are just a few reports I thought you would find interesting.

LESS IS MORE

A new study in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports finds just a little bit of exercise each day is better for the body than one intense workout session. Researchers from Australia and Japan have found that just doing a handful of bicep curls each day, five days a week actually improves muscle strength more than continuously doing dozens of curls in a longer exercise routine once a week. They also found peopledon’t even have to work out at full intensity to achieve these results.

BEST WORKOUT TIME

What’s the best workout time (and “never” is not an acceptable answer)? Morning workouts may have the most benefits. One of the biggest advantages —and the top reason the morning is the best time to workout —you burn calories faster, this according to an article in The Healthy.

THINK THIN

Do you spend at least 20 minutes on every meal? That’s the amount of time it takes for your brain to recognize that you’re full, say Harvard University Medical School researchers. Most of us wolf down our food faster than that and keep on eating, because we can’t tell how full we actually are. According to the book Break Through Your SetPoint: How to Finally Lose the Weight You Want and Keep It Off, by George Blackburn, MD, Ph.D. the more slowly you eat, the more you’ll enjoy your food, and the more satisfied you’ll feel.

Now, while all these tips and tricks are interesting food for thought, you and I both know that nothing is going to change without taking action and going it alone is hard. Do you need some extra help in your diet and exercise goals? Let me point you to the team that helped me lose 65 pounds in 16 weeks –the staff at Cool Springs MD. Dr Lodge and his team of personal trainers, dieticians and medical professionals are ready to help you with their stated goal for everyone to be “Happy, Healthy and Whole”
