The other evening at sunset, I witnessed one of the most brilliant rainbows in the sky. It was literally breathtaking. I was reminded that this beauty was so much more than a natural wonder after a storm but an expression of God’s covenant with humanity. God’s covenant with me.
Because we see rainbows after a storm, it serves as a visible reminder to believers that God keeps His Word and He will continue to care for us.
Genesis 9:13, “I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth”.
In recent days, the rainbow has received negative connotation. Some would say it has been “hijacked”.
The primary difference is that the pride flag is a human-created symbol of personal identity and community, whereas God’s rainbow was created by God Himself, through a weather phenomenon representing a divine promise. Also, there are only six colors in the pride flag versus seven colors in God’s rainbow.
The beauty of God’s rainbow is that it stretches across the sky for all to see. It is wide enough to remind every human heart that God is faithful to His word and the biblical meaning does not disappear because society may give it additional meanings. God’s promises are not undone by culture, trends, or human interpretation.
The next time the clouds break, and the colors begin to shine, remember this is heaven’s reminder that God keeps His promise. We can place our total trust in Him. Even after the storm, His covenant still stands.
