The Thorn is making its way to Tennessee this Fall for its first ever Fall tour. This stage show tells the epic story of God’s love for the world and the spiritual battle for all humanity. Often described as cirque meets the passion of Jesus, The Thorn features music, drama, aerial acrobatics, dance, fire, and more.
The show first began in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as an illustration to showcase to students what God has done for humanity and over the past 25 years, it has evolved into a national touring show with a cast and crew of over 50 people and has since been adapted into a movie which was released in March 2023.
The Thorn creator, John Bolin, says God called him: “to tell stories on the page, stage, and screen,” an assignment he has now completed with the film version of “The Thorn.” His books include novels (The Eden Project) and Christian growth guides (So Loved, The Two Doors of Heaven, and Life Unlimited). He and his wife, Sarah Bolin, have taken the story of the gospel and transformed it into a creative showcase that has garnered a viewership of over 1 million.
Told from the perspective of John the Beloved, The Thorn takes you on a journey from creation to resurrection, bringing to life the story of the gospel. Walk through the garden with Adam and Eve, encounter Judas as he betrays Jesus, and mourn with Mary over the loss of her son. As you are drawn into the story, experiencing it alongside these known Bible characters, you will come to experience the story more intimately.
Parents, be aware that the show is recommended for ages 12+, with some scenes depicting the brutal reality of crucifixion. Children ages 6+ have enjoyed the show, however, the death of Jesus can be intense and takes place in the first 30 minutes of act 2. Parents are encouraged to use their discretion in bringing young children.
Although polls show that U.S. church attendance is declining, interest in Jesus is growing. “As I first saw with my students 25 years ago, people who may have jaundiced views of Christians or churches are more open to learning about who the real Jesus was, how he lived, and what he taught,” said John Bolin.
While previous incarnations of The Thorn live show have been performed mostly at churches, the 2023 tour makes the show available to everyone at mainstream performing venues.
“Jesus believes in accessibility,” said Bolin. “He wants everyone to have access to the ultimate story of love and hope. That’s why he came to earth in the first place.”
