Happy Birthday candles | Nashville Christian Family Magazine

I used to treat birthdays like ticking clocks: More candles = less time. How depressing!

I’d watch a professional tennis match thinking, “I used to be able to hit like that,” and feel the sting of envy. Not just at my declining physical abilities, but at all that time they still have on their clocks.

But here’s what God is showing me in 2025. Every year has gifted me at least one thing I’d never give back: An opportunity that changed my trajectory, a hurdle that toughened my character, a friendship I would never trade in, or a memory so vivid it makes me laugh (or tear up) with joy. Not to mention, my wife and kids who I adore … yet, they wouldn’t exist in my life were it not for the necessary passage of time.

Stack enough of those gifts together and you realize: I’m not running out of time, I’m creating stories. I’m making an impact. I’m becoming part of the stories of others that are also moving forward in life.

So today, I’m not mourning the turn of the calendar. I’m celebrating a life filled with a collection of stories unique to me. Many stories still being written …

So, let me hear from you. What is a moment from 2025 that you wouldn’t trade for anything? If you feel brave, email me at gresham.hill@leecompany.com. Let’s build a thread of reminders that every lap around the sun brings its own magic!
