What The Bible Says About Thanksgiving

November, the leaves are changing, days are getting shorter and the chill is in the air.
For most Americans, when we think of Thanksgiving, we think of Plymouth Rock and the Pilgrims celebrating with Native Americans.   Of course, football is also on the mind of many!

But, there is a much longer history of Thanksgiving than that. As a matter of fact, Thanksgiving is not merely a social or cultural tradition, it is an act of worship.  Thanksgiving is not merely a suggestion; it is a commandment.  Psalm 100 is a beautiful reminder to approach the Lord with gratitude and praise.  The Lord’s goodness and steadfast love are unchanging and eternal.  This year, may we bless His name and reflect on His enduring love!
Thanksgiving is an essential aspect of our relationship with God.

Psalm100:4-5
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise; Give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.

James 1:17
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

Colossians 3:15-17
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.  And be thankful.  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.  And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

These verses underscore the importance of gratitude in our lives. It emphasizes the role of Scripture in Thanksgiving.  For us as Christians, Thanksgiving is not just a holiday but a way of life that should permeate our daily actions and interactions.

Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your mind in Christ Jesus.

I Thessalonians 5:18
Give Thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

These Scriptures encourage us to give thanks to God, even in our trials and anxiety.  Let God’s peace guard our hearts and minds. Thanksgiving becomes a powerful means of finding peace and tranquility, even in the face of our challenges.

So, as we gather with family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving, let’s not just savor the food, fellowship, and football, but take a moment to reflect on the profound message the Bible gives us on Gratitude.  Let this season cultivate a heart of gratitude, not just on this special season, but every day of our lives.
