My mom would remind me of this little statement from time to time growing up, “Birds of a feather flock together”. Meaning, I would find my group, a like-minded community as I navigated life. It made me aware of the type of people my life attracted and what I was being attracted to.
I will say, I have had some amazing friends come through my life and thankful for each one.
Jim Rohn, motivational speaker, has famously quoted, “We are the sum total of the five people we spend the most time with.” There is another quote, “Show me your friends and I will show you your future.” Turns out this is not just a catchy quote or good advice from my mom, it is biblical… Proverbs 13:20, “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”
So, who are you spending most of your time with and, do you like the direction your life is going?
I love the story in the Bible of the group of friends that carried their sick friend to Jesus, lowering him down on a cot through the ceiling. Not only was it brave for the friends to carry their sick buddy across town, but he had to be pretty trusting to allow his friends to lower him down through the roof on a cot! What a great relationship. The healthy friends took on the responsibility for their sick friend to do what he could not do for himself. He was paralyzed. (To read the entire story see Luke 5:17-20).
As I take a personal inventory of the type of friend I am, I want to be like one of those guys – taking my friends to Jesus! Equally, I want to make sure I am spending time with friends that will take me to Jesus! As a result, guaranteeing my life moves in a positive direction, attracting birds of a feather.
Proverbs 17:17, “A friend loves at all times.”
