Even though the hot and humid “dog days” of summer are upon us, I am eagerly anticipating the start of another thrilling college football season. Sports are a passion of mine, but college football stands out as my favorite.
As a dedicated University of Alabama Crimson Tide fan, my allegiance runs deep. My father attended and taught at the university for many years, my mother was on the staff, and I also attended, along with my son. My father was a lifelong college football fan, following Bear Bryant’s storied career at Alabama. Until his passing at 96, my dad derived great joy from watching college football and cheering for “our” team. It’s no surprise that friends and family consider me a devoted fan.
Each new season prompts me to reflect on a couple of important questions: In God’s plan for my life and His desire for me to exemplify a follower of Jesus, is a football game truly that significant? Does my fervor for my team overshadow my example as a Believer and my efforts to spread the Gospel? Do I feel the same excitement when the Lord provides an opportunity to witness to a non-believer about Jesus as I do for a big game?
While college football or other sports may not be your particular passion, whatever we prioritize over serving God as a witness should be reconsidered. We must ask ourselves these questions, especially during the football season.
I believe the most crucial task for us as Believers is to spread the Gospel and the Good News of Jesus Christ with the utmost excitement and enthusiasm. Remember, the Lord not only provides the opportunity but also gives us the words we need to say.
